Fitness Photoshoot Preparation Guide
Preparing for a fitness photoshoot should help you feel confident, organised and ready to enjoy the experience. It should not involve starving yourself, attempting a last-minute transformation or worrying that your body has to look perfect.
Whether you are celebrating a personal milestone, documenting your physique, preparing for a competition or creating photographs with your partner, a little planning can make a considerable difference.
This guide explains how to choose your outfits, look after yourself before the session and arrive with everything you need.
Our sessions take place inside a completely private Leicester photography studio. The purpose-built gym set and our portrait and boudoir sets are all under one roof, giving you the option to create several different looks without travelling between locations or posing in a public gym.

Decide What You Want Your Photographs to Represent
Begin by considering why you want to have the photoshoot.
You might want to:
- Recognise a change in your strength, fitness or confidence
- Record a weight-loss or lifestyle milestone
- Capture your physique around a competition
- Create content for a fitness business or personal brand
- Celebrate the progress you have made with your partner
- Experience a confident and sensual gym-themed shoot
- Create personal photographs without sharing them publicly
Your reason will influence your choice of clothing, lighting and sets. Someone documenting muscle definition may want a different style from a couple celebrating a shared fitness journey.
You do not need to arrive with a complete creative brief. We will help you plan the session and develop a suitable balance of athletic, portrait and, where requested, tasteful boudoir imagery.
When Should You Book Your Fitness Photoshoot?
There is no universally perfect time to have a fitness photoshoot.
If you are working towards a competition, programme deadline or personal target, booking in advance gives you a date around which to plan. It also helps secure suitable studio availability, particularly if your timing needs to coincide with a specific stage of your preparation.
However, you do not need to wait until you have reached a final goal. Progress rarely follows a perfectly straight line, and an important milestone can be worth documenting in its own right.
If your session is intended to record a personal physical change, our Body Transformation Photoshoot page explains how we can create a visual record of your journey.
Competitive athletes may want to schedule their session around stage condition, a competition tan or a post-show period. Our Women’s Bodybuilding and Physique Photoshoot page provides more specific guidance for this type of session.
Plan a Varied Selection of Outfits
Bring more than one outfit whenever your package and session length allow. A small, considered selection creates more variety than a suitcase filled with items that all produce a similar look.
Suitable fitness photoshoot outfits may include:
– A sports bra or supportive crop top
– Leggings, fitted shorts or cycling shorts
– A fitted vest or T-shirt
– A coordinated gym set
– Trainers or boxing shoes
– Posing trunks or competition clothing
– Swimwear
– An oversized shirt or sports jersey
– A bodysuit or lingerie set
– A favourite non-fitness outfit
– Heels, jewellery or simple accessories
Fitted clothing makes it easier to photograph your posture, shape and muscular definition. You can still bring a looser layer for warm-up photographs or to create a more relaxed style.
Check every outfit before the session. Make sure it fits comfortably, is not damaged and does not become unexpectedly transparent under stronger light. Remove labels where necessary and avoid clothing that leaves deep marks on your skin immediately before it is photographed.
Most importantly, choose outfits that feel like you. You are never required to wear lingerie or reveal more than feels comfortable.
Coordinate Colours and Clothing for a Couples Session
If you are attending together, your outfits do not need to match exactly. They should, however, look as though they belong in the same photograph.
You might coordinate through:
– Similar neutral or monochrome colours
– Matching sportswear brands or styles
– Complementary gym sets
– Shared team shirts
– Similar levels of formality
– One meaningful item connected to your journey
Avoid having one person in highly styled competition clothing while the other wears a very casual outfit, unless that contrast is intentional.
Our Couples Fitness Photoshoot page covers shared sessions, individual photographs and images created together.
Bring Relevant Fitness Accessories
A few personal accessories can help make the photographs feel connected to your real training experience.
Depending on your sport or preferred style, you could bring:
– Boxing gloves or hand wraps
– Resistance bands
– Lifting straps
– A weightlifting belt
– Yoga equipment
– Medals or competition awards
– A water bottle or shaker
– Your preferred trainers
– A sports bag
– Small pieces of branded equipment
– An item connected to an important milestone
Our private gym set already provides an authentic fitness environment, so you do not need to bring large or heavy equipment without discussing it with us first.
Avoid packing too many props. A few recognisable items usually work better than trying to include every part of your training routine.

Do Not Make Extreme Last-Minute Changes
Your preparation should support your health and energy rather than leave you feeling exhausted.
Avoid making sudden changes to your diet, water intake, supplements or training routine solely for the photoshoot. Extreme dehydration, severe food restriction or an unfamiliar last-minute workout can affect your energy, concentration and ability to pose.
If you are following a specialist bodybuilding or competition plan, take guidance from your qualified coach or relevant health professional.
The aim is for you to arrive feeling alert, comfortable and capable of moving through the session.
Training Before Your Photoshoot
You do not need to complete an exhausting workout immediately before your appointment.
A light session or familiar pump-up routine may help some experienced clients feel prepared, but excessive training can leave your muscles fatigued and make holding poses more difficult.
In the final day or two before the shoot:
- Avoid introducing unfamiliar exercises
- Give sore or strained areas time to recover
- Prioritise sleep and normal hydration
- Follow your established routine rather than experimenting
Food and Hydration
Eat in a way that is familiar to your body and allows you to maintain your energy.
Unless your coach has advised otherwise for a specific competition plan, there is usually no benefit in arriving hungry or dehydrated. A photoshoot involves standing, changing outfits, holding positions and repeating movements. You will generally feel better if you have eaten appropriately and had enough water.
Avoid relying on unfamiliar supplements or foods that tend to make you feel uncomfortable or bloated.
Hair, Make-Up and Grooming
Professional hair and make-up may be available depending on the package or options selected. The look can be adapted to suit athletic, natural, editorial, competition or more glamorous photographs.
Before attending:
- Arrive with clean skin if professional make-up is included
- Follow any preparation instructions supplied by your make-up artist
- Avoid trying an unfamiliar skincare treatment immediately beforehand
- Check your nails, hands and feet if they will be visible
- Plan hair removal according to your normal routine
- Moisturise in the days before the shoot if this is suitable for your skin
- Avoid products that may transfer heavily onto clothing or studio furniture
If you will be wearing a competition tan, tell us in advance. This allows us to consider the lighting, colour balance, outfit selection and protection of the sets.
Practise Without Trying to Learn Every Pose
You are welcome to practise basic physique or competition positions, particularly if they are relevant to your sport. However, you do not need modelling experience.
During the session, we will direct your posture, hands, expression and body position. Small changes to your stance or the direction of the light can significantly affect muscle definition and body shape.
You will not be expected to arrive knowing exactly what to do.
It can still be helpful to consider:
- Which side of your body you tend to prefer
- The areas you most want to showcase
- Any positions that feel uncomfortable
- Whether you prefer strong, relaxed, editorial or sensual imagery
- Examples of photographs whose overall mood you like
Reference images are useful for communicating an idea, but the session will be adapted to your own physique rather than used to reproduce someone else’s body or photographs exactly.
Prepare Your Skin and Avoid Clothing Marks
Tight socks, underwear, waistbands and sports bras can leave temporary marks on the skin. Where practical, travel to the studio in comfortable clothing that does not create strong lines across the areas you want photographed.
Take particular care with:
- Tight sock marks around the ankles
- Bra straps across the shoulders
- Waistbands around the stomach
- Watches and hair ties around the wrists
- Tight leggings before photographing bare legs or lingerie
Do not worry if some marks remain. Allowing time between outfit changes can help, and appropriate finishing can be applied to selected images.
What to Pack
Use this checklist before leaving for the studio:
- Your planned outfits
- Suitable underwear for each look
- Clean trainers and alternative footwear
- Fitness accessories or meaningful props
- Jewellery and styling accessories
- Hairbrush and personal grooming products
- Competition bikini or stage clothing, where relevant
- Water and a light snack
- Any required medication
- Reference photographs or a saved mood board
- Loose clothing for travelling home
- Your booking information and studio directions
Pack outfits separately where possible so they remain clean and easy to find. Trying them on beforehand can prevent missing underwear, unsuitable footwear or last-minute fit problems.
Arriving at Our Private Studio
Please allow enough travel time to arrive at the agreed appointment time without rushing.
Our studio is located in Leicester city centre and is accessible from across the Midlands and the UK, with direct rail connections making Leicester approximately one hour from London St Pancras.
The gym is part of our private photography studio. You will not be posing around members of the public, waiting for equipment to become available or changing inside a communal gym facility.
Because our other photography sets are in the same building, your session can move from the gym into portrait or boudoir settings where your chosen package and available time permit.
This makes it possible to create a varied collection while maintaining privacy throughout your experience.
What Happens on the Day?
Your session will generally include:
Final planning: We review your outfits, preferred style, and the areas you would like to emphasise.
Hair and make-up: Where included or selected, your look is prepared for the planned concepts.
Outfit and set selection: We decide the most efficient order for your clothing changes and studio sets.
Guided photography: You receive direction throughout the shoot, including assistance with posture, expression and positioning.
Additional looks: Depending on your package, we introduce other outfits, lighting arrangements or studio sets.
Image selection: The selection, retouching and delivery process will depend on the package you have booked.
We recommend creating enough variety to make your final collection interesting without rushing through too many unrelated ideas.
You Do Not Have to Look “Ready”
Many people delay booking because they believe they need to lose more weight, gain more muscle or feel completely confident first.
A fitness photoshoot does not have to prove that you reached an externally defined standard. It can recognise consistency, recovery, confidence, effort or simply a decision to celebrate yourself now.
Every session is adapted to the person or people being photographed. Women are our primary audience, but our fitness photography experiences are also available to men and couples.
Plan Your Fitness Photoshoot
If you are considering a fitness, transformation, physique or gym-inspired session, we can help you choose the most suitable experience and prepare your ideas.
You will have access to our private gym studio and, depending on your package, the opportunity to use additional portrait and boudoir sets under the same roof.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I prepare for a fitness photoshoot?
You can begin planning outfits and concepts as soon as you book. If the session is linked to a competition or programme deadline, reserving a date early is advisable. You do not need to follow a special transformation plan simply to be photographed.
What should I eat before a fitness photoshoot?
Eat familiar foods that provide enough energy for your session unless you are following qualified professional advice for a competition. Avoid sudden dietary experiments, extreme restriction or attending the shoot feeling weak.
Should I work out immediately before the photoshoot?
A light, familiar pump-up routine may suit some clients, but an exhausting workout can leave you fatigued. Do not introduce unfamiliar exercises or train so intensely that posing becomes uncomfortable.
How many outfits should I bring?
Bring a considered selection based on your package and planned session length. Activewear, fitted clothing, swimwear, competition outfits and an optional bodysuit or lingerie set can provide variety without creating too many rushed changes.
Do I need to bring gym equipment?
No. We have a private gym set inside the studio. You can bring smaller accessories connected to your training, but please discuss any large or specialist equipment with us in advance.
Do I need modelling experience?
No. Direction is provided throughout the session. We will help you with posture, positioning and expression, adapting poses to your physique, mobility and comfort.
Can I use both the gym and other studio sets?
Yes. The gym and our additional portrait and boudoir sets are under one roof. The number of sets and outfit changes available will depend on your package and session length.
Can men and couples book a fitness photoshoot?
Yes. Fitness sessions are available for women, men and couples. Every shoot is planned around the person or people attending.
Should I bring reference photographs?
You are welcome to bring a small selection of reference images to communicate your preferred mood, styling or lighting. These will be used as inspiration rather than copied exactly.
Where does the photoshoot take place?
Your session takes place at our private photography studio in Leicester city centre. The studio is accessible from across the Midlands and has convenient rail connections from London and other parts of the UK.
